Week 2 for the online students continued with the fundamentals of biometrics, following the IEEE CBP body of knowledge. Learning objectives included:
* Definitions and general history
* Introduction to biometric systems
* Biometric applications
* Biometric functionality
* Fundamental enabling technologies
This module builds on the first module by exmaining the definitions and background associated with the development of biometric technologies. Students are presented with a brief history lesson, covering the beginnings of biometrics, dating back to prehistoric times through to the present day. The advances of Hershal, Bertillon, Faulds, Galton, and Henry are discussed, alongside the early applications of biometrics / forensics, such as in the prison system. A more detailed history of the 1960′s through to the present day follows. The next step is to introduce students to the biometric system – including the desirable biometric characteristics, the different types of sensors, and the various advantages and disadvantages of the sensors. After that, we discussed enrollment and databases including an introduction to the general biometric model. We then finished the class with an overview of the performance metrics.
