The Purdue University airport is located on the main campus at West Lafayette, IN. Post 9/11, the airline industry was impacted by new additional security rules and regulations. The rationale behind working with the airport is to provide aviation technology information about the benefits of biometrics in their environment.
Currently, a flight simulator has been equipped with a vascular pattern recognition system that allows only registered students to access the simulator. The biometric system is also used to keep track of usage and attendance of the simulator.
A face recognition research conducted at the airport included an evaluation of face recogition over a period of several months, using the airport as a case study in site evaluation, and providing aviation technology students with exposure to biometrics and their potential uses within their environment.
