Biometrics in Healthcare
Biometric technologies are emerging in the health care environment, from access control, single sign on for doctors, and administrators, and patient identification. Healthcare professionals have expressed an interest in using fingerprint recognition as a means of authenticating an individual accessing the information systems. Investigation of suitable biometric technologies in the healthcare environment prior to implementation for physicians, nursing staff and patients is needed to develop a plan for the deployment of appropriate technologies in an environment in which those needing to be identified will not always have optimal characteristics. A current study is investigating potential differences in skin characteristics such as oiliness, moisture, and elasticity on image quality and matching performance in comparison to the general population. These results will be available in the summer of 2009. A second area of interest is to look at cleaning regimens of contact devices to minimize the potential for bacterial infections to spread. This initiative brings together a group of technical experts from the biometric industry, academics, and hospital administrators to provide a forum of knowledge exchange and dissemination with respect to the deployment of biometrics in the health care environment.
